Love and War

I put my heart

On the front lines

Waiting for your attack

Trying to defend the

Walls of my emotional fort

While you broke in

With weapons of persuasion

Aimed to conquer me

As the battle ensued

I attempted to

Fight off this enemy

That I knew would

Pierce through my heart

With arrows of poison

Disguised as

Bullets of honey

Denying you would cause

My own self-destruction

So I stayed in battle

Hoping I could convince

You to join my side

And together we could

Win the war against

Those who opposed our union

But I defeated myself

By hurting those

I failed to trust

Only to surrender

To the pain of

Being betrayed by you

Taken hostage by

Your captivating words

Because all the time

I was in combat

You deceived me

I was unknowingly

Cavorting with the

Enemy that was you

And I'm left here with

A fatally wounded heart

Rewrite 2012

I put my heart
on the front lines
waiting for your attack,
trying to defend the
walls of my emotional fort
while you broke in
with weapons of persuasion
aimed to conquer me
as the battle ensued.

I attempted to
fight off this enemy
that I knew would
pierce through my heart
with bullets of poison
disguised as
arrows of honey.

Denying you would cause
my own self-destruction
I stayed in battle,
hoping I could convince you
to join my side
and together we could
win the war against
those who opposed our union.

But I defeated myself
by hurting those
I could not trust
only to surrender
to the pain of
being betrayed by you,
taken hostage by
your captivating words.

Because all the time
I was in combat
you deceived me;
I was unknowingly
cavorting with the
enemy that was you,
and I'm left here with
a fatally-wounded heart.
