Spoiled

Folder:
Society

You know, we Americans,

As a country,

Are spoiled.

Don't you see how

Our fingers are coiled

Around our money

So tightly?

While it may have been

Earned rightly,

Maybe we should

Loosen our grasp,

This clasp

We have on our

Material possessions.

You know, there are

People on the other side

Of the globe

Who are thankful

When God provides

Enough food to fill

Their stomachs,

Even if they still

Have to walk the streets

With no shoes on their feet.

They only have the clothing

On their backs

And no expensive suitcase

To pack.

You know, we are

The richest nation

But we take the least vacation.

Instead, we work and work

To accumulate more and more

Only to store

It away to just

Collect dust.

We have toiled

Only to become more spoiled.

But we don't take any leisure

Or find any pleasure

Outside of this business

Of busyness.

I know it is

By our very nature

To hold onto things

Like packrats

And save this and that,

Unable to get rid

Of anything.

But, God forbid,

We are taken away prematurely

And they have to pry

Our dead fingers off our stuff.

So I am left wondering: why

All this fuss?

We can't take it with us.

Rewrite 2012

You know, we Americans,
as a country,
are spoiled.

Don't you see how
our fingers are coiled
around our money
so tightly?

While it may have been
earned rightly,
maybe we should
loosen our grasp,
this clasp
we have on our
material possessions.

There are people
on the other side
of the globe
who take pride
when God provides
enough food to fill
their stomachs,
even if they still
have to walk the streets
with no shoes on their feet.

You know, we are
the richest nation,
but we take the least vacation.

Instead, we work and work
to accumulate more and more
only to store
it away to just
collect dust.

We have toiled
only to become more spoiled.
But we don't take any leisure
or find any pleasure
outside of this business
of busyness.

I know it is
by our very nature
to hold onto things
like packrats
and save this and that,
unable to get rid
of anything.

But, God forbid,
we are taken away prematurely,
and they have to pry
our dead fingers off our stuff.

So I am left wondering:
why all this fuss?
We can't take it with us.
