Rather mundane afternoon yet

with the rise of winter and

Spring still several months away

It’s as good a time as any

to try to come to some new level

of understanding about all the shit

               that’s going down

               on Planet Earth

but it doesn’t always look to good

from where I’m sitting

violence record number of homicides

and crack and ice and GBH

and Saddam backwards is mad ass

which is correct

but a little gloomy as war and theft

and greed permeate our society

and the censors have a field day

and Mapplethorpe, Serrano and 2 Live Crew

             and

I left wondering where the Bill of Rights

has been hidden as I can’t smoke a pipe

or buy a gun though the founding fathers

made a promise to me

Seems as though the political man no care

what the Constitution says

as Havel quotes Jefferson and Americans

not knowing what he’s talking about

or where he’s coming from

So what it be this word called freedom?

and why are the preacher and the politician

so bent on removing it from my

                      possession

Yes, Pope John Paul II I do read Henry Miller

and I accidentally saw Traci Lords nude

and screwing but only after she turned 18

and no longer needed fake ID

and who are you anyway, besides

the leader of the largest, oldest

criminal organization in the world?

But I not impressed as my manifesto

for freedom and human rights is sung aloud

and no I won’t lower my voice for you

I wanna live and I wanna be free

and I can see some

of the lines you telling me

Am I a traitor for reading Marx

back in the 11^th grade?

Does this make you a holy murderer

for reading the Bible?

Or is it a trite point without answer?

It’s really up to the reader

Nietzsche ain’t responsible

                for Hitler

anymore than Jesus is responsible

for Jim Jones or Gary Heidnik

and where are we Freedom in Chad

freedom in Mozambique

but no such freedom in South Africa

or the Islamic world

as Maddass continues his insanity

and breaches of faith are apparent

but why can’t I listen to 2 Live Crew?

Granted they ain’t much to hear

but shouldn’t that be my choice to make?

Mapplethorpe sucked in more ways than one

but why can’t the townspeople of Cincinnati

go see the pictures and render their

own decisions on how unbalanced he is?

Jesse Helms is offensive to me

I want him banned

Jimmy Swaggart is offensive to me

I want him banned

Andrea Dworkin is offensive to me

I want her banned

Isn’t that the mentality the censors

              are advocating?

What upsets one group MUST upset every

              other group or else

and the Freedom Removal Campaign

continues as Oregon hopes to take

peyote from the Indians

and Nancy Reagan has a couple

martinis after preaching to kids

about the dangers of drugs

but they would be wise to remember

what happened to Marie Antoinette

as freedom and survival are inherent

to human nature and if taken away

will eventually be taken back

by whatever means necessary

and almost every freedom uprising

has been bloody and costly

and yet somehow those atop

             setting the rules

don’t seem to value their own

                       lives

anymore than they value ours

so there needn’t be any guilt

           should it come to that
