LONG SHOTS

An afternoon at the museum

requires a hearty lunch

so a stop at a local tavern

allows for a meal

paired with an adult beverage

Roast beef with horse radish

seems to hit the spot

One can request long shots

for a little extra heat

an old timer ranting

about someone putting out

a cigarette on the wall

and he wonders the gall

He’s wearing a DeadHead tye dye

and I realize that,

yes,

we are that old now

He is obsessed with the cigarette

extinguished on the wall

although it happened

at a different bar

He won’t let it go.

The rant also evolves to his father

who was military

and played by Gable

in “Run Silent, Run Deep”

and Don Rickles was also

a co-star in the film

I’m drinking a Yards Brawler

but I have

no inclination to fight

Somehow the talk goes

on to Rambo and the Dead

The bartender rolls his eyes

when he refreshes my pint glass

the old timer is loaded

and entertaining the bar.

He keeps intending to leave

but then doesn’t.

I place a long shot

in my roast beef sandwich

as the juice drips on the plate

I have no doubt

he will make it home tonight

and it’s not even a long shot
