ON NOT WRITING A BERLIN WALL POEM

If you’re alone

with your thoughts long enough

eventually

the pen will

take on a life of its own

but all the brooding

in the world

doesn’t excuse not

writing the Berlin Wall poem

and it doesn’t really

matter what happens

to your stolen clothes in Prague

seeing castles and canals

is impressive

German villages along

the Elbe River inspire awe

& certain numbness of cliché

overtakes a solemn moment

of pure reflection

and in the end

there are no excuses

for not writing this poem

but what you’re really

afraid of isn’t that

what you’re really

afraid of is that

in the end

it doesn’t really matter

that you didn’t write that poem
