Friends and greed don´t mix

How did we end up like this, divided into species and races? How did we become enemies with the ones that are not like us? How was the world before our time? These were questions that circled the young mouse´s head, he wondered if there was a time where everyone got along and the creatures of the world didn´t have anything to be afraid of.

He looked for answers everywhere. He tried to talk to the eagles but they were too high up in the sky to hear the little mouse´s squeak. He tried with the fish but couldn´t understand their words under water. Finally he decided to ask the old wrinkly turtle.

Nobody knew how old the turtle was but he has always been there, they didn´t know if he was hundreds or thousands of years old. The mouse knew that with age came wisdom, so he was certain that the old wrinkly turtle would have the answer.

He went to the cave where the turtle lived and asked.

-Mr. Turtle, I have been wondering what happened to the world.- said the little mouse.

-What do you mean young one?-

-Was it always like this, have we always been afraid of one another?-

-I know what you mean, there is always a moment in your existence when you question your beginnings. It´s a long story.- answered the old wrinkly turtle.

-What happened then?- asked the mouse impatiently.

The turtle grabbed an old, dusty book from his shelve, opened it and started to read.

-In the beginning everyone got along and all the animals where friends, we played, we danced, and talked to each other.- began the turtle. –But then the bigger and stronger creatures became thirsty for power and thought someone had to rule over everyone else.-

-There wasn´t much we could do- continued the old wrinkly turtle – the small creatures where hidden, protecting themselves from the conflict of the bigger creatures. Lions went to the plains, gorillas to the jungles, and sharks became the kings of the sea, that is how the world got divided into kingdoms ruled by different creatures.-

-So we weren´t always like this?- asked the little mouse.

-No, not at all, we were all friends once, but sometimes greed and power can change someone and turn them into something different, sometimes they won´t even recognize themselves.- explained the old wrinkly turtle.

-That´s a shame, I would have liked being friend with everyone.-

-Maybe we cannot be friends with everyone but we are friends, you and me.- said the turtle while closing his book.
