Within these walls of silence

The quiet beauty waits

The wise one passes sentence

But youth’s thirst it will not sate

Fie on those who dare

To deny the plea of heart

The silent walls aware

Of the impending gape of earth

The old and wise stir meaning

Whilst the quiet beauty seethes

Interrupted by walls new singing

As plaster and rock breathes

How now this new life urging

As all around lies still

Why bent on silence purging

How now this new found will?

This newborn spake

As the observed grew pale

The wise one awake

As newborn’s utterings ail

Wisdom seeketh not to prove

Where experience has taught

The ignorant will not be moved

Where all others aught
