Old Timex

My grandfather’s Timex watch

I remember every Sunday evening going to my grandparents’ house to have that big traditional family reunion. Every Sunday was like a routine for me, I arrived and said hello to everyone then I took my place beside my grandpa in that big old couch where he used to sit every day. We always talked about the same topics every Sunday, first it was sports then it was watches, he loved talking about watches and he loved showing me his newest acquisitions whenever he bought a new one. My grandpa was a huge watch enthusiast so you would imagine he had a different watch everyday but no. He used to wear the same watch everyday. This watch was nothing special as you would imagine, the watch he used to wear everyday was a small digital Timex. One day I asked him why he liked that watch that much and he explained to me why. He told me about how his first watch was a small watch that his grandfather gave to him when he was a young boy. It was nothing fancy, just a small regular watch from the 1900’s. He became so obsessed with watches and as he grew old he expanded his collection with some new fancy pieces but one Sunday he saw me with a digital Timex in my wrist. He told me that in that moment he remembered that first watch his grandfather gave to him many years ago, he remembered that non-luxurious watch that was the first one of his collection. Then he realized about the real value of watches, he realized he began collecting because he shared the same feeling with his grandfather so he decided to buy a new digital Timex and he bought one a little different than mine. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, he stopped wearing many beautiful pieces for a digital watch. Days, weeks and months went by and he kept using the same watch, he was really proud of that Timex, it reminded him of his grandfather. Then one day my own Timex broke. At the big family reunion that week my grandfather saw my naked wrist and he immediately asked me what had happened to my watch. I told him it broke while I was playing soccer. He then took off his watch and gave it to me, he told me it was one of his most precious possession and that I should take care of it. I remember his exact words being “Now this is your first precious piece in what I believe will be a beautiful collection”. The next week sadly my grandfather passed away and now I consider that watch as my most precious possession and I just can’t wear it because I’m afraid of losing it.
