He leaned down and peered into the truck window. There sat a woman, eyes closed, still but for her hands deftly fingering wooden prayer beads. He rapped gently "Maam could you roll down your window."

She neither looked at him nor made any indication that she was aware of his presence. He had pulled her over for expired tags which he happened to notice when he drove up behind her at a stoplight. He followed her for a mile or so as he ran the tags on his computer, the results showing that the vehicle was also no longer insured, a heavy fine on both counts.

He rapped again on the glass, this time with more force and employed an authoritative tone "Maam do you know why I pulled you over." He was not asking questions so much as demanding compliance.

A booming voice shouted inside his head "Leave this woman alone!"

The effect was so shocking he reeled backward stepping onto the highway. A semi veered to avoid hitting him, sounding its horn with a loud blast as it rumbled by.

The officer collected himself, approached the truck cautiously. He stared at the woman curiously. She slowly turned her head and opened her eyes, spoke to him softly without moving her lips "I have the right to remain silent."
