we want to be in love

   but push and shove against one another

   on spurious grounds of traditioning,

   mental conditioning leads us to a locked room

      with no windows
lover comes too close, we become bellicose

   to keep honest engagement at bay

      away from painful interactions

prickly from overexposure

   even the tenderest touch can cause bruising
