Country worth dying for

He wants to fight for his country
What must I do without him?
When he could be dead or dying right now
Lying on the ground
Bullet in his heart
Bleeding through his uniform
Breathing becoming shallow
Eyes wide open
Mouth agape
Almost as if an angel appeared before him

How must I live without him?
When I know his life has been cut short
By someone who did not know that his darling was waiting for him,
Crying over him
And missing him

He was forgotten underneath the dirt and rumble
And in the background guns fired and bombs dropped
No one cared for him
Or held him when life left his body

And he lay there
No one uttered a prayer
No one murmured a final goodbye
No one kissed his cheek or said I love you

My darling died.
