The darkness

Folder:
Flash Fiction

Alone at home, I was just about to get some sleep, had an exhausting day and I needed some rest, my head was dizzy and spinning around. The whole house was in darkness and there were just three lights on. My eyes were starting to close when I heard it, a noise that I will never forget and that will always be carved in my head. I jumped out the bed and started shaking and sweating cold, my heart was beating as fast as it could possibly go and I felt an earthquake in my room. Since I was alone, a house foreigner was the only explanation to that noise and that only scared me more. I decided to turn on some music and put on the earphones, it had worked before so I just got together all my faith and started singing to cease the scary things away from my head. Just when I thought that everything was gone and I could sleep well, the noise became even louder and more noises started. In my desperation and anger I ran outside my room and checked all the doors and windows, just to make sure that nothing was outside and that maybe the sound came from another house.

The front yard and the garden were empty and dark, just as I wanted them to be. Maybe I was just hungry, so I went to the fridge to find some food and relax watching a movie or playing video games. But getting close to the fridge was my worst mistake. The light of the fridge was faint, I tried to reach for the light switch of the kitchen, and the worst thing I imagined became true, they wouldn’t turn on. I really wanted to faint and to wake up in the floor the next morning, just in a desperate try to see the morning light again. Suddenly, I felt something in my back and my whole body was paralyzed. I closed the fridge in a rush and started running in any direction I could see. My fears were materialized, there was a shadow in the corner, I couldn’t see its eyes but I was pretty sure that it was starting at me with some kind of creepy smile. With a lot of nerve, I started yelling and cursing at it, even if that didn’t scare it away, my fight with the shadow was approaching.

Without any hesitation, I started throwing everything I could towards the corner, even if it was a different kind of entity, I wouldn’t let myself die without even fighting. Suddenly, the shadow started changing its position around the house and I kept cursing and throwing things at it. The fight seemed endless and, apparently, the shadow was winning. In a sudden movement, the shadow was right in front of me, my whole body was cold and paralyzed, but that wouldn’t stop me from fighting and trying to safe my life. Escaping was not an option, since there are a lot of locks in the door and in the outside gate, so it was a survival game that I needed to win. I decided to finish everything once and for all. I punched the shadow in the face and I woke up in my bed. I ran out the room and saw my mother in the living room. Watching the clock was a relief, 10:00 a.m., no soul, or ghost or shadow could come out at this time to scare me, I’m not sure if everything was a dream, maybe it was real, but I hoped for my fight against the shadow to be over, forever.
