Power Overload

Thirteen billion years ago the entire universe was the size of an egg.  At some point there was an enormous explosion, and, little by little, the planets formed, the stars multiplied, and space expanded and expanded and expanded.  The gods of the universe convened a meeting at the Great Council of Heaven in order to decide what to do with the little blue planet that they had named “Earth.” Filled with luscious lakes and oceans, fertile green valleys, and the bluest of skies, the gods wanted to create a happy world. “How should we start the happy world,” asked one god.

“Maybe we should start with a red cardinal and a blue jay flying in the sky,” said another god.

The two birds were put in charge of colonizing the new planet. They were told by the gods to create animals that were suit for every piece of land available. Every animal was destined to perform a different task from the rest, this made their size and features vary. They created extremely colorful creatures with all sorts of patterns on their bodies.

“You should think about who will be the top species of the animal kingdom” the gods told the cardinals, “Think about who will set the balance and be in charge”.

And thus began the creation of all the other species. The cardinals worked day and night during a year designing every single creature that would inhabit the small but beautiful planet the gods had created. While the two cardinals worked on their designs with the intelligence that the gods gave them for this specific purpose, the gods were discussing whether or not the animals should be given freedom to act as they pleased.

“Why would we trust this creatures to act correctly?” asked Chronos.

“We need to” said Zeus as he sat at the head of the table where the gods met every time they had to make an important decision.

“Why is that, Zeus?” asked all the other gods seated at the table.

“Without freedom, happiness is not possible for these creatures” said Zeus as he got up and left.

All the gods agreed with Zeus and did not give this matter a second thought, except for Chronos who since the beginning of times had been jealous of the power Zeus had over the other gods. He was determined to make Zeus look like a fool in front of the gods, and the creation was the perfect chance.

He began his evil plan convincing the two cardinals that he wanted to help, gaining their trust in no time, so they showed him the designs of the animals. All he had to do then was to introduce the concept of power in the minds of every single animal created, and that was it.

Chronos’ masterpiece was a species of creatures that no other animal could defeat. The mighty beasts became the rulers of the animal kingdom. They were careless about anyone else’s survival except for theirs and did everything to be more powerful every day instead of keeping the balance the gods had originally planned. It took them no time to be the only creatures left on the planet, and only then they realized that all the power they had was not worth it.
