Not That Kind of Love

Not That Kind of Love

It seemed so easy to imagine yourself as being part of your favorite love story. When life gives you the chance to be close to having one it brings you back to reality by giving you a slap in your face.

A lot of love stories begin in high school, when boys and girls start to realize that having a relationship is more than holding hands and being together for less than a week. Marie, a senior, was having the best year of all along with her friends. Nothing was wrong with her life. She was one of the prettiest girls in school; she was going good with her grades, had some amazing friends and was happy as ever. When it comes to boys, Marie was a flirty girl but never accepted anything with guys. There was just this one guy, her best friend. They went out a couple of times; Marie actually rejected another guy in which she was really interested for her best friend, and it makes sense, no one is going to be a better boyfriend than your best friend, that is what every love movie has taught us. Anyways, it didn’t work the first time so it was over, at least that is what she taught. Her best friend asked another time to go out; this time didn´t seem to be a date, so it was going to be just a “friends” thing. Months passed and going out became something they did every weekend. Even when they talked it felt different. Now he was dedicating her songs and being a little bit corny. Marie, as it didn’t worked the first time, never taught that something was going to happen between her and her best friend.

When you less expect it is when love comes around. A party was about to begin and Marie went into her friend´s house to get ready and wait for everyone else so they could arrive together to the party. The environment was tense. Marie was texting with Geronimo, her guy best friend, and he told her that two of their friends were mad with each other. It seemed like they were. “Let´s go outside to buy something while they talk”. Whispered Geronimo to Marie. Everything seemed like a better plan than staying in that room. They went out of the house and stayed just talking about meaningless things. Time passed and they decided to walk. The feeling was romantic; the dark of the night made them feel as if they were the only two people left in the world. Music started to play. The songs that were playing were the ones that Geronimo dedicated to Maria, Marie felt as if she was imagining everything; as if she was visualization everything from the perspective of a girl watching a romantic movie. But music was actually playing. They got into a gazebo and Geronimo got a flower from the garden to give it to Marie. “Would you be my girlfriend?” Marie was still in shock but was able to say yes. Everything was planned. Their friends were not mad and Marie was too innocent to anticipate what was going to happen. When I say too innocent I mean it. After that they went to the party. There is not much to tell about it. Of course they were really happy and everyone could see that. It sounds like the perfect story right? Every single girl wants to have a story in which she falls in love with her best friend and she is reciprocated.

18 months later passed and they were all perfect. More than a relationship it was the best friendship someone could ever had. But perfect thing don´t exist. A week before prom, Marie, received some news that she was not aware of and that she was not capable of know if they were truth. Geronimo cheated on her… with a guy. She didn´t know what to do. Prom was coming and Marie didn´t want to ruin everything. She waited a week, crying on her inside not telling anyone about it. But the day came. Marie talked about it with Geronimo and the rumor was truth. He explained himself that he loved her but he recently understood that not in the way Marie loved him. The relationship ended and life gave a slap in Marie´s face to let her know that love is not perfect like in the movies.
