Prose Poem (My Grandfather's Fishing Gear)

My Grandfather's Fishing Gear

If you‘d known my grandfather, you would’ve said many great things about him, mainly his patience and humor to his irresistible and energetic grandsons. Whenever you saw the fishing gear beside the old battered white wall, you knew that a fishing trip would be near. You could see the shiny fishing rods next to the tiny and smelly baits lying beside his fishing clothes that all together were the perfect combination for an ideal fishing day. Every Sunday was an emotion day or a pretty usual day for us. Anyway, even in the hottest days of June or the cold days in December, we travelled 2 hours to “El Chorrito”, where the journey began. What he couldn't forget in his fishing kit were two things: the red bandana and his skin color fishing hat that would cover all of his head. Sometimes we would catch enough fish for dinner, and sometimes we needed to buy from the market in town. My grandfather was an excellent fisher but even six hours in the hot sun and catching no fish would stop him from going the next day. Even in rainy days, you could see my grandfather cleaning his gear near the porch of the little house he had in the lake. Another thing he couldn’t leave out besides his fishing gear was his scrambled eggs in the morning. You could tell how happy he was even in regular family days (Sundays) he would wear his unique color skin fishing hat and the red bandana. Even though it was a very hard work for a 74 old man with the set up of the boat and the fishing stuff, he would have a big smile on his face. My grandfather was a great person inside fishing and outside fishing. Sometimes you would have the most amazing fishing days with him but sometimes you had to carry his fishing box all day long. You could look his face of happiness after a long day of good fishing with his grandsons. Although we couldn’t realize his effort to keep us entertained back then, I realize now that he could not be satisfied if we weren’t happy, even if his fishing rod broke, or didn't caught any fish, he would do the best to give us what we needed. Throughout the year, you could see the fishing gear appear two or three times a year, however these were the best moments with him.
