Journey to the afterlife (Flash fiction story)

Journey to the afterlife

Blake was a guy obsessed with death. His obsession started when he was only 5 years old. His mother was agonizing and talked about seeing the further, feeling lightweight and having a strange ability to fly around. Her mother passed away a few hours later, but her memory lasted throughout Blake’s life. Another strong impression Blake had was when he was 15 years old. This time it was his father. He had undergone a simple cardiovascular procedure in his leg but turned out to be a mess that would force doctors to amputate his leg. After this, everything went wrong and again, another important person in Blake’s life was about to die. This time was different though, his father talked about this same lightweight and wonderful feeling but at the same time he could see the city and the mountains surrounding him. This made Blake feel confused. What is beyond what we know? What can be seen in the dawn of our lives? Is it painful? All of these questions were haunting him. His obsession grew every day. He read testimonies of people who claimed they had been to the afterlife and back. His room was filled with posters and publications concerning death and what is afterwards but unless he died or was about to, he would never know for certain what it is. “Wait a moment. That’s it, I must die to know.” he thought. This was a severe thought. However, Blake was a smart man and was not exactly thinking of a suicide. He was thinking of a way to die but come back after he seeing enough. It was risky but his curiosity made him brave.

At the beginning his quest he thought of seeking the assistance of doctors and other health specialists, but of course nobody would risk their jobs for such a complicated and, for them, pointless procedure. However, he later met Dr. Harvey Finstein, a doctor who had lost his license for his unconventional methods. He was known for trying extreme xenogeneic transplants with humans and reptiles. This trials were made while looking for new methods of tissue regeneration and healing. Dr. Finstein thought that Blake’s desires were very interesting and for the sake of science, he would help him reach his goals no matter the risks. Later on, Blake and the Doctor devised a machine consisting of an electro shock and a pipe that went straight to the hearth delivering a high dose of adrenaline. They were expecting to induce a cardio respiratory arrest and after barely four minutes reanimate Blake with another shock and adrenaline to avoid any further damage, nevertheless, nothing could be for sure.

Everything was set, it was a warm morning at the middle of September, mount Keith could be seen at the distance as the sun started to strike it. Blake was ready for the procedure. The tube was in and the electrodes were placed. Exactly at 8:01 am Dr. Finstein pressed the button and the shock traveled through Blake’s body. A few milliseconds later his heart stopped and journey had begun. Blake could see how he slowly left his body. He felt everything, the lightness, the freedom, and he even had the ability to fly around. He was enjoying this state when he suddenly felt the need to go upwards. He could see the face of Dr. Finstein, calmed and serene, as he left the room. Blake then saw the top  of the roof after he went through and faded into the sky. He flew around mount Keith but then stopped. He still wanted to go upwards but a sudden fear invaded him. He was overwhelmed by the immensity of the sky and as well by the huge planet on his feet. More than ever, he felt like a grain of sand in a big ocean, his thoughts were not clear anymore and he could not remember his goal anymore. But it was under this uncertainty that he suddenly saw a light opening in the clouds. Suddenly, the fears had gone and everything was clear again. There was no pain or worries and the calm grew as he approached the light. This did not last much because suddenly, he felt something, like a hook, pulling him back towards earth. The panorama around him suddenly changed and before he realized he was back on his body. Four minutes had passed and the adrenaline rushed through his veins. All of the sudden, he felt the pain, the fear, the uncertainty bigger than ever. He thought that his life, even though he was alone, was good, but after the journey to the afterlife, he realized how much better it could be when it is over. Dr. Finstein approached Blake searching for answers but before he could say anything Blake pressed the button again and the empty slots of adrenaline sentenced a point of no return. Dr. Finstein then concluded that nobody really knows what is in the afterlife because nobody is dumb enough to come back and realize what he or she were missing.
