To James Harlan, Secretary Of The Interior, 1865-1866

I, for one, believe that act was dishonorable---

dismissing the good. gray Poet from his minor post;

a man far better than you ever were, who was with Poetry most

(and to the brim, as you were with your own self) full;

you, Mister Secretary Harlan of the Interior,

and among your entire staff the worst inferior.

ENVOI (to the reader):

I would like to ask this of J-Har's

soul:  "Have you ever once looked up and enjoyed

"a late evening or early morning full of stars,

"or would that, also, have caused you to be annoyed?"
