Upon Leaving You

Snowflakes swirled above the river

The train cut through the cold air

Past the towns with the dilapidated tool sheds in the back yards

Past the old train yards and tracks now rendered useless

Seeming to go faster than ever this time

Moving me farther from the city

and the subway, and the smog…

and you.

Snowflakes melted on the windows of the train

as tears crept steadily down my cheeks

Starting over in a new, yet old place

Doing again what I thought was right the first time

Yet doing what i learned was never right to start with.

I cried for the past I had lived

I cried for life I was living

and I cried for the future…

without you.
