VERDICT

Two mothers in the court room sit, a verdict soon to hear,

Two honest  families, closely knit, each shares both hope and fear.

Each loves a child most tenderly, but murder had occurred,

And now the close knit families, are awaiting the jury’s word.

.

One mother prays: “Please free my son! - he’s guiltless, set him free“!

-And one prays: “justice must be done, crime asks for penalty”

The jury did deliberate,- a long  time, - grueling job,

But no one did anticipate, a cheering  frenzied mob.

The verdict came,- it came,- at last, and then one mother smiled,

The other mother paled aghast. condemned they had  her child.

A slick reporter’s microphone struck then this mother’s face

“Congratulations to your son” - your offspring Oh disgrace”

She shunned the crowd, withheld her  tears, and stifled a wild sob,

Confirmed she saw her secret fears, but who contains a mob?.

She exited, heart brokenly, yes a broken heart had she,

But the mob outside cheered with delight in boisterous gayety.

A verdict is a serious  thing, whatever it may be

Not a  tryst before the Burger King, or outing on a spree.

No one does wish to lecture here, but sentencing is grave

There is no need to cheer or jeer, - its nice if folks behave!
