MERMAIDS CAN ALWAYS CHOOSE TO SWIM AWAY

I thought myself bold and decided to take it

With all I could hold

I snatched it up straight and swallowed it dry

A thick pill with nothing to chase

I savored the taste of lump in my throat

While I smiled a dark humor smile

You started to choke

How sad for you- no one one else knows the Heimlich

And you’ll have to save yourself with an oak chair or a quartz island

Here I sit, in a starry-eyed gaze

Aware of the present but hungering for days

Afternoons under palm trees with salty hair in the breeze

Wearing whatever swimsuit I please

Carrying no embarrassment from your odd tantrums

Or your bicoastal breakdowns

I’ll become a mermaid and live by the sea

Where sailors will follow me - but I’m only a tease

I'm a feminist, not a hedonist

More anarchistic than optimist

I’m collecting seashells and driftwood to build me a home

Where no man can enter and I’ll enjoy it alone

Live with the roar of the ocean instead

Of a man fighting demons that live inside his head

That live in his car, his desk, and his side of the bed

Why would I want that? I never will know

Never fall for shadows when sun can melt snow

Bury my toes in the sand and my nose in a book

I’m writing a future that he cannot foil

All of this peace has me feeling spoiled

I’m becoming a glutton for glee

No punishments.
