Rabbits and Hares.

Many years ago when the fairies first came to this world from outer space, there were millions of rabbits and hares living in the thickly wooded countries of Europe. Fairies as you all know are responsible for all of the colours on this earth. Fairies paint the flowers, the trees, bushes, even the sky, and the clouds.

Fairies are hard working little people that speak their own language when they are with each other. When other people are around, they speak the language of those that are near to them for example, In England fairies speak English, and In Wales they speak Welsh. Among themselves, all fairies speak the old language that they brought with them from a planet, which lies in the area that scientists and astronomers call Andromeda.

One year all the work that the fairies did was undone by the hares and rabbits, hares and rabbits normally eat grass but this time they ate all of the flowers and what was worse they dug up the plants and flowers to eat the roots. As quick as they could the fairies replanted and coloured the flowers and plants but It was of no use the hares and rabbits dug up and ate the roots and the stems and also the flowers even quicker.

The Fairy Queen in those far off days was a pretty woman but not very wise she always needed someone to help her. Even for simple things, she needed help. On this occasion when the fairies complained to the Fairy Queen her very first thought was to get Mother Nature to help her, after all Mother Nature was a very wise lady and always knew what to do if something went wrong. The Queen called to Mother Nature for help, Mother Nature saw what the rabbits, hares had done, and she was very angry. “I will have to kill off all of the rabbits and the hares there are far too many of them running around and the damage they are doing Is terrible,” she said.

On hearing, what Mother Nature had said the fairies were very unhappy, some even started to cry. “Why are you all so unhappy and why are some of you crying? If I get rid of all of the rabbits and hares you will be able work without them damaging your lovely plants and flowers.” The Fairy Queen asked Mother Nature Is It necessary to get rid of all of the rabbits and hares. Mother nature smiled and winked at the fairy queen. “Let us hear what the fairies have to say about my doing such a terrible thing as to killing off all of these furry little creatures.”

One of the smaller fairies that had heard what Mother Nature had said opened her small little mouth and asked Mother Nature to rethink about killing off all of the lovely little bunny rabbits especially the very young ones that were so cuddly and cute. Mother Nature said, “ There shall be a show of hands all the fairies that want the rabbits to be done away with are to raise their right hands.” There was not a single hand raised. “Well what shall I do asked Mother Nature?” One little fairy called out, “why not plant some things that the rabbits and hares really like, something that grows Into the ground and also something that grows above the ground all rabbits and hares seem to like certain roots others like the leaves of some of the plants. Let us try to grow something just for the hares and rabbits.” Show me what the rabbits and hares like the most,” said Mother Nature. Some of the fairies went away and came back with a reddish looking root the others came back with the leaves of a plant that spread out well when it grew. “These are what the rabbits and hares like the most,” one of them said.

Mother nature smiled at the fairies and said, “so be it these roots shall grow big and one or two will satisfy the hunger of the rabbits and hares. We will call this root a carrot that will make it apart from all other roots. This plant we will call a lettuce that will also help to feed them when they are hungry.” On hearing these words, the fairies started to cheer Mother Nature, who is a very wise person. Now you all know how the first carrots and lettuces came to be. If it was not for the hares and rabbits destroying the hard work of the fairies, there would never have been any need to grow something extra to feed them with and we poor humans would never have had carrots for our dinners or lettuces for the salads that we all like so much.
