Creatures Attracted to Light

There’s no light in those fields
Where the leaves of cane stalks
sway with the warm tropical breeze
The heavy hands painted them red
tainting the sugar bowl with the
colors of injustice.

Those who pull the weight of scales
tells you that the youth traded books for guns and amulets
Perhaps marches draw change
much slower than bullets.

But they will never tell you that these
creatures are merely attracted to light
In darkness, they create flickers
so the rest are not left blind

They bring truth to the lines
to give power to their picket signs.
And flowers grow from embers that their feet dragged from the towers they set on fire.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This poem was inspired by the Negros 19. I’ve also created a film to visually depict the imagery. Please visit:
