When a storm is approaching the
coastline here in Florida,
many go out to enjoy the surf
and tides - we build sandcastles
just to watch them tumble.
In reality, when the hurricanes
come, some hi-rise buildings
tumble...but the tiny little coquinas,
who make their home in the sands,
survive.

The day our sand castles tumbled,
we laughed as tiny coquinas
scrambled to survive.
The waters came down
like floods upon the earth;
white foam rolled over
innocent little creatures
who refused to die.
After the storm, they emerged
to watch the sunrise,
long after we were gone.
