the world end

I saw the world end in your eyes. You were staring at yourself in the mirror. I’m not sure you even knew I was watching.

I saw you putting on the mask you wear so well.  Your natural beauty being covered by the one you prefer. I’m not sure you even remember what you truly look like.

I saw your eyes flick over to your phone screen as it buzzes. Your face full of light when you saw the name. I’m not sure you even knew what to expect.

I saw you eat up his words like it was your last meal. Your face beginning to crumple under the weight of what you just read. I’m not sure you even knew how to breathe.

I saw the first tear fall from your eyes. Your breath getting faster as your hands began to shake. I’m not sure you even heard me ask what was wrong.

I saw your shoulders struggling to hold the weight of this new found reality. You were trying to remember where you went wrong. I’m not sure you would even listen if I told you.

I saw how badly you were hurting and the only thing I wanted to tell you was to breathe. I wanted to hold you down and scream into your ear that you are enough.

I saw the world end in your eyes. I watched as your world crumpled around you while you struggled to breathe. Then I saw you catch your breath and look back into the mirror with a strength in your eyes that wasn’t there before. You lined your eyes in black and wore the lipstick he didn’t like. I saw you put on the shirt he called revealing and lace your feet into the boots that made you too tall for him. I watched the world end in your eyes and was astonished to see you form a new one so fast
