Mom, He's Perfect

Fernanda had always been very picky with boys. At her 20 years of age, she had never had a boyfriend because she always rejected each and every one of the boys who came to her. Her mother always encouraged her to go out with boys, but she always found a flaw in them: either they were too short, too thin, too fat, they did not like soccer (soccer means everything to Fernanda), criticized the folk music Fernanda liked, did not dress well, or any other kind of defect.

One day at school, a new guy entered the class and caught Fernanda’s attention. He was tall, strong and well dressed. The new boy sat next to Fernanda and asked her about the assignments they had already done. It was hard for her to concentrate on their conversation because she could only think of how attractive this new guy was. They chatted about other things, and Fernanda discovered that the boy loved folk music just like her, especially Fernanda's favorite band, Mumford and Sons. They also shared the same movie tastes; both loved sagas such as Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, Harry Potter and Star Wars. She also found out that the boy loved dancing at parties, and that was something that Fernanda found very attractive in a guy.

They were in math class, and the professor had to call their attention more than once because they would not stop talking. "If you wanna talk that much, you should agree and go out somewhere later, but do NOT talk here during class," said the professor. Fernanda and the new guy turned all red and the rest of the students laughed.

The rest of the class, Fernanda and the new boy remained silent, embarrassed by what the teacher had told them. Fernanda could swear that those were the most uncomfortable thirty minutes of her life, and they seemed to last an eternity. When the class finally ended, Fernanda hurried to put away her stuff and leave the classroom as soon as possible, but the new boy quickly stopped her. "Hey, maybe we should follow the teacher’s advice and go out, don’t you think?” He said to Fernanda jokingly. She did not know if he really meant it or if he was just joking trying to make things uncomfortable between them, so she just laughed. "Is that a ‘yes’?" The boy insisted. Fernanda understood that he was totally serious about it. She blushed at the thought that such an attractive guy like him would want to go out with her. "Where?" Fernanda asked. “You’ll see. Give me your number so you can send me your address, I’ll pick you up”.

In the afternoon, Fernanda came home very excited and told her mother about the new guy. "Mom, he’s perfect." Her mother could not believe it, she thought that day would never come. Fernanda was also impressed that for the first time in her life she had met a flawless boy. It took her a long time to choose what she would wear for her date, she finally went for a casual blouse with jeans and spent extra time on her make-up. Her mother gave her some dating advice before the guy picked her up and took her to the restaurant.

The boy took her to an elegant oriental restaurant. Fernanda was very pleased with his choice, since she liked sushi very much (more points for the boy). That night, they talked about everything: music, movies, school, teachers, and very important, about goals and aspirations in life. The boy told Fernanda that he wanted to be successful in order to have enough money to travel all around the world. Surprised, Fernanda told her that she shared those same life goals because she loved to travel and visit new places. She also told him that one of her biggest dreams was to go to a FIFA World Cup, but the boy did not respond to this. “What? You think it's an impossible dream?" Fernanda asked in amazement. "No, that’s not it...," the boy replied timidly. "It’s just that… I really hate soccer."
