Watching outside the car window

Car rides always made him dizzy. He, even so, didn’t hate them. He was able to look outside the window and look at the scenery passing in front of his eyes. His parents had told him they were visiting some old friends who lived on the neighboring town. He didn’t complain like his brother did. He just nodded and got out of the house, waiting until their parents opened the car. After his parents were done arguing with his brother, the three of them got out of the house, walking with frowns on their face. He just lowered his head, looking at his hand on the car handle. His father was the first one to enter the car, only unlocking his door. Then, his mother entered next, unlocking the other doors automatically as she opened hers. Finally, the brothers entered the car at the same time, each sitting as far as possible from each other. He fidgeted with his hands, looking at his brother’s movements from time to time. Even when everyone was already inside the car, it was unpleasantly silent, and remained a few seconds more than the usual awkwardness of every other car ride. It was finally broken by the engines starting and the sound of the radio. His brother instantly putting on his earphones without taking his sight from the window. He knew they were his earphones, but let it pass since he seemed to be having a bad day. After all, he was the big brother and should take care of his little brother, even when that “little” brother was almost a head and a half taller. He returned to look at the scenery, which had forgot to do in a while. It didn’t last long until he was interrupted, it was his mother trying to chit-chat. His father accelerated as he heard the first words of the woman. They were both used to this, so they kept on talking. He didn’t like talking that much. Or maybe it wasn’t really with his mother he was interested in talking right now. The conversation didn’t last that much, they talked about some birds and plants they’ve seen along the way and how much longer the ride would take. He used this opportunity to move closer to his brother. His brother remained silent and looking outside the car window. He poked his brother’s knee. His brother ignored him. He got a bit closer and whispered, “Hey, ¿what are you listening?” And, of course, this didn’t work either. He felt his father’s eyes and quickly turned to meet them at the rearview mirror, “Josh, go back to your side of the seat.” his father said in a demanding voice. He quickly obeyed and looked outside the car window. He wondered how much longer this car ride would last, when he felt a slight bump on his knee, realizing it was his brother’s.
