The Piano Man

The Piano Man

Johnny has been a musician since he was a little kid. He loves to play the piano. Before he could read, talk or even walk he already knew how to tune his little toy keyboard, his dream was to play with the best and to do so he had to be one of them. He is 21 now and he plays in private events and parties. One day, when he was in a music store, a man in a suit approached him, gave him his presentation card and said “Kid, I have heard you play, what you have is real talent. I can get you where you want to go. Do you want to come to LA and work with me?” “YES!” Johnny said without thinking twice. “There is a casting you need to go first, but don’t worry you just have to show up and I will do the rest. Go to the directions on my card at 7a.m. tomorrow, do not be late and bring your song sheets.” The man left, Johnny had the biggest smile he has ever had. He rushed home and talked to his parents. At first, they were being skeptical but then they decided to give it a try. It was late so he decided to get some sleep because he had a big day coming tomorrow.

His alarm clock went off at 5a.m. he wanted to have plenty of time to get to the musicians office “I’ll get home as soon as I finish” he yelled to his parents as he rushed out without even a toast in his stomach. He had been driving for about 15 minutes when his front left tire got a flat “You have to be kidding me” he said to himself. He called his parents but no one answered so he waited for help. He left the car in the auto shop, he saw his clock and said, “Ok it is now 6:10 a.m. and it is a half an hour trip to the man’s office. My only option to get there on time is to take the 6:30 subway.” he was exactly 20 minutes away from the station. He ran like he never had before. He did not even minded to stop the cars before he rushed to cross the street, he was very lucky he was not hit. Now he was sweating, “I can’t breathe” he said while loosening up his tie and tucking his shirt. He was arriving when he saw his clock, “6:31” he read. He got there and saw nothing but an empty tunnel. “Why did this had to happen to me today.” He coursed to the wind, and sat down on the ground. He remembered that there was a piano in the station, which he used to play when he was a kid. “Where was that thing?” he said to himself. He found it and slowly sat as if he had been injured, and well in a way, he was hurt. He just stared at the keys for a while; the station stared to get crowded.

A man in a hoodie and sunglasses sat beside him on the piano bench but he did not even noticed him, the man stared to play a song Johnny knew it was “piano man” the first song he learned to play. As the stranger played, he gave Johnny a sign to cue him in so that they could both play different notes of the song. People started to gather around them taking photos and filming with their phones. The face of Johnny completely transformed. He was no longer depressed. He really was having fun. When the song was coming to an end, the stranger stared to sing and Johnny immediately recognized his voice “could it really be?” he said as he was turning his head. He was playing with Billy Joel.
