Flash fiction story: Golf Prize

One day, Tom woke up with the best surprise in his mailbox. He opened it quickly and read that he was invited to the most anticipated golf competition of the year, World Golf Star Competition. That year, the competition was going to take place on one of the biggest courses of the world, on Australia. Tom was so excited, but he only cared about the prize, which was going to be 100 million dollars, because he thought that wining that amount of money will assure happiness. He didn’t even enjoy playing golf as much as before, but he wished to marry Diana, his girlfriend and stop working for the rest of his life.

The day of the competition arrived, and he got a little scared. His opponent, Brian, was a really recognized golf player. He won the competition three years ago, but he then injured his wrist, so he stopped playing for the following two years. As the competition progressed, the game got more and more challenging. They were on a tie, and the next hole was going to define the winner. As Tom hit the ball, something unexpected happened. The ball hit the face of the competition’s president. Everyone looked astonished, and Tom had the most horrible feeling. A woman shouted to call 911, and the vice-president called for a pause. Several members of the competition attended the hospital, including both opponents. They all seemed so worried and confused by what happened. The next day, the doctor told them on the morning that he was going to be in a coma for a maximum of two weeks approximately.

After a month passed, Alejandro, the president, was still in a coma. The whole family was in the hospital, praying and crying. Tom was still in a shock. They were all thinking that he was going to die soon because he looked worse. Tom still thought about the money he had lost, won by the other contestant because of the given events, but he sure was also thinking that he may have killed a person and that was unbearable to think about.

On a cold afternoon of that month, something unexpected happened, a nurse came in with the family, who was already hopeless, to tell them Alejandro had woken up, it was a miracle! The family notified Tom since they knew he was having a hard time and what he did wasn’t on purpose; later, Tom arrived to the hospital ready to apologize and of course Alejandro did, after a bit of realizing what had happened.

Tom suddenly forgot about the money he had lost, the only thought in his mind was relief, with this he got a new perspective in life, how it ends so easily, with a ball hitting your head maybe, and started enjoying more of it leaving materialist thoughts aside.
