Me And Preacher Bill

[for the Reverend Bill Robertson]

Week-nights, we take the country backroads from our little church.
We drink a lot of fresh iced tea, and eat a lot of perch.
We preach the Gospel to those folks until they have their fill.
What fun we have in Jesus' name there:  me, and Preacher Bill.

Now Preacher Bill is small of stature, not much to behold.
And me?---so ugly I can make a furnace go plumb cold.
But Jesus Christ can use all kinds to work His Holy Will.
And "all kinds" is just what He found---in me, and Preacher Bill.

The fancy pastors never venture out into the sticks.
They do not care to preach to barefoot girls or local hicks.
They stay in highbrow churches that appreciate thin swill.
That leaves those pearls of greatest price to me, and Preacher Bill.

We see a lot of miracles occur along our way.
(And once, a big dog knelt right down with folded paws, to pray!)
But best of all, we see the faith that Jesus can instill,
and that has kept us at the harvest---me, and Preacher Bill.

The universe is winding down and morals fall apart.
Mankind is rolling in a hog-pen, and the human heart
is choked almost to death by sins that give the flesh a thrill.
The day is spent, the night draws near.  But me, and Preacher Bill

keep working, like two crazy men who have no time to spare.
(Christ's Kingdom is ahead for us, and we will rest up there.)
Soul-winning is the job we love, and we will work until

the Lord sends down that starward call . . . for me . . .

                                                                                     and Preacher Bill.

Please forgive me for failing

Please forgive me for failing to reply to your comment on this poem.  I discovered, earlier this morning, that I had not received any of the comments posted on this poem, but at the time problems both technical and personal were interfering with everything.  So I seek your Christian forgiveness for failing to acknowledge your very kind and gracious comments.

With conviction you say a lot of things but pray can you tell the religion of those men you name, who indulge in things you have described. In addition if the universe is winding down how do you claim to win soul? To the non believers of Christ and His peace maybe "Christ's Kingdom is ahead for us" but not to those who do have immense faith in His peace and message of love. Threats profit the warmongers and sorry violence is forced to die. May peace give you good and thoughtful words and less self doubts. Long live Christ's Love and Peace!

First, let me apologize for

First, let me apologize for having never seen this comment until now.  I discovered, early this morning, that the comments on this poem were not, for reasons now unknown, delivered to me.

Thank you for reading the poem. I am not entirely sure about what parts of the poem you are commenting on, and I should hope the poem is so focused on faith as to avoid all self doubts.  Yes, there is some self deprecation, but that was the style of the evangelical experience with the man whose ministry I tried to describe in this poem.  Although he has since gone on to be with Christ, he remains the finest evangelist I have ever seen or heard; and I had the distinct and exciting privilege of working with him for almost three years.

As for the universe winding down, that is why we rushed to share the Gospel with as many people as possible.  This is the time for decision.  I happen to believe, as I think Bill did also, that we are living in the last days, or the next to the last days, and time is far less abundant than it was 2000 years ago.

Jer, this poem makes me think of my pastor. I love the serious nature of the poem with the levity thrown in. I could not help but smile at the dog praying. I bet God smiles too!

Looking forward to hearing your comments on my poems!

I must ask your forgiveness .

I must ask your forgiveness . . .  i never saw the comments on this particular poem, and must have seemed, to you, to be a rather rude person.  I am so sorry, and I beg your Christian forgiveness.  I will try to visit your poems as soon as possible.
