tragic sailing sinking ship lighthouses sole survivor drowning history

The Wreck

Author's Notes/Comments:

Loosely based on a shipwreck that happened on January 12th, 1910, in my hometown of Coos Bay. The steamer normally carried only merchandise, no passengers, but happened to have a 23 man crew that day. Waves hit the boat and overturned it, allowing water to hit the boiler room. The ship sank just off the coast, and because of the high waves, no rescue boats could be sent out after it. All of the passengers but one were lost.
