The Jersey

Every Saturday I can see my father wearing his Leon jersey. No matter the weather, no matter the score, he will be covered in green. Through their tough times in the second division, to their ascending back to first division. He would not want to take it off when they became champions two seasons in a row, and continued to wear it even after they had a horrible season. He has changed it every season, but the value of the jersey will always remain the same. It has traveled to Paris, Lyon, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and other places around the world, and it has always been worn proudly. My father’s friends would always bother him for rooting for that team, but he has always known to ignore them and keep wearing it. He would never try to pick a fight with anyone who opposed him, he would just keep minding his own business and carried on. He is willing to wear it alone or with company, mostly with my siblings and I; but he always wears it with a smile because he is proud of his hometown team. It is more than a soccer team jersey, it is a connection to his roots. It is something to feel passionate about. It is something to feel sometimes proud and other times disappointed, but never enough to leave it behind. It has felt tears of joy and tears of sadness. It has been worn in many type of events, and it is always appropriate for him. Every barbecue he has it on, and pool party as well. He wears it in his weekly bike ride and when he just wants to be in the house watching TV. No matter the occasion, he has it on. Leon might not be the best team always, but it is not about that. It is about being proud of yourself and where you come from. Being able to express yourself and know that people might think wrong of you, but their opinion is not the one that matters. My father has always taught me that being myself is the best thing I can be and that if I surround myself with the right people that is all I will ever need to be. Looking back my father has never worn his jersey to rub it into people’s faces, but to feel proud of himself and everything he has accomplished in his life.
