"Soon Her Shadow Falls"

by Jeph Johnson

It's a happy disarray,
Introducing night to day;
But she does it well until
The warning bell stops what I play
Bereft of dignity, I fail-
Her eyes drift beyond the pale
And her lashes flash
A definite decree I must assail
Though I'm subtly seduced
I still don't know what to do,
Reaching out in doubt
Expecting her ungrateful gratitude
Still it's her eyes I always see
In my dreams, yet can't believe
That her flight of fancy might enhance
These chances I've received
She says "happiness is just
How you understand me best"
Soon her shadow falls
And all my doubts are finally laid to rest
