Vanity and I

Laying by the lake with Vanity,
I gaze into that crystal pond,
and all I see is me.
I see the things no one can see:
the emotions behind the smiles,
the feelings trapped within that become impossible to express.
I see fear.
Fear of what could be, fear of what will be, fear of what is.
I see the things that I don't even allow myself to see.
I see me.
But as I stare myself down, Vanity begins to stir for even he begins to bore.
If the unexamined life is not worth living,
what do we make of the over examined life?
