Startled

by a raccoon

spurting across the yard

& climbing over a fallen tree--

victim of a tornado

thinking,

"ah the wonders of nature!"

The lawnmower won't start

and the grass is too high

and I'm running out of ideas

other than retreat

to the great indoors

and the safety

of a light switch and a fan.

The blaring sun
and the squirrels

running across the roof

fade away to Tchaikovsky

and siesta takes me away

to foreign sands and beaches

that hold greater promise.
