Laying in that Hospital Bed (11-16-06)

When you're laying in that hospital bed,

your spirits fading and your skin so cold.

If your arms are shaking and can't rest,

I'll be there to place my hand on yours.

When you're too weak to sit up by yourself,

when your legs are too weak to work anymore.

Your grotesque but beautiful eyes shudder,

I'll be there to lean down to kiss you.

Age and pain has caused your face to wilt,

but when I look at you all I see is beauty.

When the arm of your shirt is bundeled up,

I'll be there to straighten the material.

When you're having trouble eating now,

and you can't drink by yourself anymore.

I'll be there to hold your water cup,

and I'll be by your side while you starve.

I watch you gaze at the hospital ceiling,

and I wonder what you're thinking about.

I assume you're reflecting on the years,

and I hope you've had a life you loved.

When you've decided you can't go on anymore,

and after such a long but short lifetime.

I'll be there to hold you when you pass on,

I'll be there to love you after your gone.

As soon as my time on Earth is through,

you'll be waiting there on the other side.

Into your arms I will run to be held,

you will kiss my loving lips for awhile.

You'll thank me for always being there,

and for loving you in times of despair.

Through all of the times we've fought,

and the times I didn't like you much.

You'll thank me for taking care of you,

through the early years and the end.

When you were stressed out emotionally,

and when you were in the hospital bed.

For being at your side while you passed,

and giving you enough love to make you last.

For here we are standing in eternity together,

we always said our love would be forever.

Author's Notes/Comments:

11-16-06 -- I wrote this about my grandpa in a way, at least it was inspired from what I saw of him an hour or
so on 11-12-06. I tried to write it from a ladies point of view, but it works either way. This poem is about love, life,
and staying content. It's appreciation for love, love that last over 62 years (like theirs) and love that last just a
short while, even a few months. -- The length doesn't matter much, as long as it was true while it was going on.
