107 Arrested Outside Carlyle Group's Midtown Office
107 anti-war protesters from the M27 Coalition were preemptively arrested early this morning while demonstrating outside the Midtown office of the Carlyle Group. The Carlyle Group is the worlds largest private investment firm managing $14 billion in assets, including stakes in a number of military-related companies. Former Defense Secretary (and deputy CIA Director) Frank Carlucci, former Secretary of State James Baker and, former President George Bush and former British Prime Minister John Major are all top Carlyle officials who stand (literally) to make a killing off of the war. A jail solidarity rally is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at Police Plaza 1 and a vigil will continue until all the detainees are released.
Meanwhile, hundreds of anti-war protesters in Oakland were shot at Monday by police while demonstrating outside a port where war cargo is loaded.

Rockafeller Ice Skaters Stage Die-In; Six Arrested
(from the open newswire) "Today a little after 3pm 10 people who had been skating around the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating rink laid down in the middle of the rink in a die-in, protesting the U.S. war on Iraq. The participants took off their jackets to show what looked like blood-stained t-shirts and laid on the ice for a few seconds before officials came out and asked them to get up and leave. Some of the participants, when asked, slowly crawled off the ice as if still wounded, but four people stayed until the police arrived to make arrests."
Two others were arrested in an attempted banner drop at the Rockafeller rink. Read rest of report
Meanwhile, members of Jews Against the Occupation disrupted a speech by an appearance by Dore Gold, former Israeli Ambassador to the UN, at a "Young Israel of the West Side" event last Thursday, April 3. About 60 people demonstrated against the Israeli occupation outside the event. Read more

American Activist Gunned Down By Israeli Army
Two International Solidarity Movement (ISM) activists, including American Brian Avery, 24, of Albuquerque, New Mexico suffered an attack by Israeli machine gun fire today in Jenin. Avery was shot in the face when he and fellow activist Tobias Karlsson of Sweden, who was uninjured, left their apartment to investigate gunfire. Avery was reportedly wearing a fluorescent red vest with a reflective white cross when he was gunned down. He was later transported to a hospital in Haifa for medical treatment.
ISM activist Michael Shaik reports, "Under the Israeli Army's own rules of engagement soldiers are not permitted to fire warning shots with mounted weapons. They may fire warning shots with light hand held weapons and must aim away from the people they are warning."
Meanwhile, Saturday also saw Israeli security forces kill one of a small group of Palestinians who had opened fire on a West Bank settlement. And the Associated Press reports that the driver of the bulldozer that killed American ISM activist Rachel Corrie on March 16 is back on the job, according to Israeli army officials.

Puke-In at Fox
(New York City) Humans Everywhere Against Violence Eternally (HEAVE) unexpectedly struck at the New York Fox News headquarters and CNN on Tuesday, April 1, 2003. A group of 12 snacked on homemade blueberry, cherry and apple pies before they emptied their stomachs on the sidewalk of Rupert Murdoch's Fox News Corp at 48th and 6th ave. and CNN at 49th. Tuesday's campaign was entitled "Operation G.I. Tract Freedom". Organizers claimed their action was a gut-response to the current war reporting in mainstream media in general and Fox's heavily pro-war bias specifically. [Read More]
ARTS AND THE WAR Apr 1 2003
In Art, Some Anti-War Messages Less Than Welcome
While much of America's attention has been focused on "embedded" reporters and the follies of Peter Arnett, some recent events in the commercial cultural world show just how difficult it can be to express dissent in a time of war. The pressure to conform seems to cross all commericial and artistic boundaries.
Just prior to the start of the invasion of Iraq, alt-country band the Dixie Chicks gained widespread noteriety-- and criticism-- for remarks that were critical of President Bush. And at an Ani DiFranco concert in New Jersey, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) forbabde the distribution of anti-war literature.
Now, pop singer Madonna, has pulled the plug on the video for her new single "American Life," writing in a statement that the video "was filmed before the war started and I do not believe it is appropriate to air it at this time. Due to the volatile state of the world and out of sensitivity and respect to the armed forces, who I support and pray for, I do not want to risk offending anyone who might misinterpret the meaning of this video."
Meanwhile, Wanner Brothers has decided to "avoid making a political statement" through posters advertising its new teen comedy What a Girl Wants. According to SignOnSanDiego, print advertisements for the film featured a photo of star Amanda Bynes wearing an American Flag t-shirt, and flashing the peace sign while she stands between two British Royal Guards. The poster has been reworked so Byrnes now stands with her hands at her side. There is no word on whether the American flag will be removed from posters used in Europe. [Read More]
In an attempt to break through the stifling atmosphere with humor, 50 to 60 protesters held a mock "pro-war" April Fools Day rally on 6th Avenue. According to our open newswire, "most people on the street seemed amused by the humorous chants of 'Celebrate April Fool's Day: Go to War!' and happily accepted the leaflets, entitled 'Don't Be Fooled by Media Lies!' However, one counter demonstrator did offer the chilling rebuttal of, 'Grow up!'" [Read More]

DIRECT ACTION Apr 1 2003
National Day of Direct Action Planned
Despite recent articles in the mainstream media claiming that anti-war protesters are avoiding acts of civil disobdience, the call for a national day of civil disobedience has been issued by Direct Action to Stop the War. According to Direct Action:
"We call upon all cities, organizations, and individuals to organize widespread non-cooperation focusing on Federal and Government buildings, oil corporations, and arms manufacturers and transportation systems."
Locally, the March 27th Coalition is planning a mass civil disobedience at the offices of The Carlyle Group, 58th and Fifth Ave, during morning rush hour. Affinity actions will also be taking place at other targets around the city, and there will be legal protest options available, both at the site and at other locations.
A local planning meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, April 2 (6-8:30pm, at Gay Community Center, 207 W. 13th St., just west of 7th Ave.), and a pre-action meeting on Sunday, April 6 at 6pm, Washington Square Methodist Church at 135 W. 4th St.
