The Bed Feels Smaller

She turns the doorknob and walks in the room filled with boxes, and various pieces of furniture, along with decorations in desperate need of arrangement. She requests for him to hang the frame close to the breakfast/supper table, but not too close to the front door, for they could open or close it too hard and cause the picture to fall, but also not too near the stove, because she does not want its wooden frame to stain with the vapor food releases while cooking.

Her mom told her to bring “only the essentials”, but she always wants to make everything a “little bit nicer”. The young lady soon realizes that she will have to pick between her porcelain flower vase, where she loves to place peonies, or the glass cups and dishes they will be soon utilizing to eat from. Both will not fit on the shelf which is placed on top of the breakfast/supper table. She keeps reminding herself that the breakfast/supper table will be the only table, which she does not want to tell him, it kind of bugs her, since it is unlike what she is accustomed to back at home.

She walks about five steps, walks past the hallway/bathroom/closet (since the bathroom is too tight to fit a sink, and it is placed in the hallway, along with a closet, just like in a hotel room). He seems so excited to be finally be able to live with her. They have been together since high school, and ever since planned to move in together just after graduating college. But being a college graduate is not as easy as everyone makes it seem. There are student loans to pay off, finding a place to live in, and also bills, bills, bills, and bills.

That same night they are at last able to share a bed. Their room only fits a full sized bed, which is placed next to the wall, and next to it there are small plastic drawers (since the closet was filled with mostly her shoes, clothes, and more clothes). He has always been a simple guy, and he did not mind placing most of his clothes in the plastic drawers. About a foot in front of their bed, there is a desk with his tv and Xbox, which she wishes could be placed elsewhere since she has never enjoyed watching him play.

Regardless, she undeniably enjoys being able to at last live together.

Weeks pass by, she arrives home from work, walks a step, and realizes that her frame after all is being stained by the food’s vapor, and that her makeup sponge got stained with his shaving cream on the bathroom/hallway sink. She walks five steps and notices that their bedroom has acquired a mix of smells consisting of food, perfume, cologne, bodily fluids, among others. She turns her head and sees him playing his Xbox, on their full sized bed which is placed next to the wall, in front of the desk with his console and tv on top. She takes her shoes off, now their bedroom smells as of feet as well. She kisses him hello, lays on their bed, and falls asleep. Next morning she wakes up from a full night sleep feeling a terrible ache on her neck and back. The bed felt smaller.
