Applause to you, Professor: J. V.---cunning
in words deployed, that are not simply slumming,
to our modern fashion's delight, down-dumbing.
Sometimes you wrote against the smoother grain,
but always, in both soul and sense, humane.
To some, your artistry was wrought in vain,
but I find your bright mastery quite stunning.
