Refugee *

What an odd life to be leaving behind.
I never knew how little I knew until now.
What folly! What a flummoxed state of mind.
The man I used to be just took his final bow.
It may seem an act of futility –
The chains of the past can be hard to shake –
But this newfound grace and agility
Is proof enough this was the road to take.
Now is the time. I must say goodbye
To wrong turns, lack of insight, sudden shame.
Just a minute more wasted and I
Will only have complacency to blame.
The bridge is falling out from behind me
As I breathe the breath of a refugee.
