Anywhere but here

And I asked him where he was going,

"Anywhere but here."

His simplistic reply.

Yet the words stayed with me,

Weeks and months over,

Couldn't shake it.

Realized those are some of the hardest words to say.

"Anywhere but there."

To know you have to get out,

Yet have no idea where you're going.

The fear of the unknown exists not,

For it is only the knowledge of escape,

The need to be free of the current.

Such a simple three word line,

Yet with it one conjures the past,

All that is wrong,

All the pain.

One thinks the present,

And how it is,

And how nothing changed from the past.

And it is also the future,

The hope for escape,

And with it the end of all that is wrong.

Such a simple,

Three word line.

Past, present and future.

The fear was not in his eyes,

Nor was the fear in his mind.

He already left it behind,

The first step he took in the different direction.

To leave it all behind,

And start over again,

Most wouldn't have the courage,

Many don't have the means.

I watched him disappear over the horizon,

Leaving me alone,

Feeling the pain

Consume what was left.

Pulling me down,

Dragging me underground.

And when the day came,

I stood upon that same dusty road.

His footsteps long washed away,

But his dreams remained alive.

And in me,

All I could hear was those three words.

Elation

Freedom.

Thoughts swirled around me,

My heart pounding in my chest,

No chance to rest.

They were now approaching me,

Already the questions forming.

Did I have the courage to escape?

The courage to remember the past,

Face the present,

And confront of the future.

They came up to me,

And I had that look in my eye,

Looking out upon freedom,

And never turning back.

One foot in front of the other,

All I had to do.

The rhythm soon follows,

And it becomes a run,

You're finally free.

They asked me where I was going;

And I said, "Anywhere but here."

My simplistic reply.

My words filled me head,

And I made my choice,

One foot in front of the other,

As I walked down the same lonely road.

No matter how hard the path,

Anywhere,

Is truly better then here.
