“An unexpected Duet” By Monica A. Mattei Llaguno

“Can I have another gin and tonic please” I said to the bartender. I looked around at the crowded place, people where dancing and singing carelessly. The bartender handed me my drink and I strolled back to my table.

“You should know that I put us in line for the karaoke” She indicated while winking at me. I uttered a sigh, I already knew Lisa would do karaoke, there is not one occasion when we come here and she doesn’t sing. As people passed to sing, the crowd either followed the singer or ignored him/her. I drank a couple of more drinks, just preparing myself to sing as I don’t do it without getting a little drunk, just for the fun of it.

“Lisa is up next with Hooked on a feeling by Blue Swede and later is Jamie with Summer Nights by Grease” the lady in the stage announced as a drunk guy took the stage to sing, or at least try to. I looked over at Lisa and she giggled. “I’ll be back in a jiffy” she uttered as she walked past me and into the bathroom.

The guy sang and cried and did the air guitar thing until he fell and threw the microphone stand off the stage. People laughed at his silliness. Lisa passed and sang too, she danced and everything and people followed her. She is the type of girl that everybody likes, she’s social, and she is pretty and smart and funny. My best friend was kind of perfect, but she never notices it. And beside all, she doesn’t need to get tipsy to be able to sing in front of people.

She came back to our table after she sang, and a couple of guys followed her as usual. I was up next so I took the last shot left on the table as a little encouragement for my turn. I waited beside the stage for the announcement that I was next.

“Jamie is up next with summer love” Said the host with an appealing voice. I walked on stage as the host passed me, and at the same instant I notice another guy walking up to the stage. He was blonde and he seemed to be a little bit tipsy. We both took the stage but only I had a mic as the host had gave it to me. A worker passed the guy on the stage another mic and the song began. He started singing Danny’s words.

“I got chills. They’re multiplying”. He sang, I didn’t know if to follow his roll or just take off. Little by little he sang with more confidence. He was kind of cute. I followed him and sang the song, and people stared cheering for us. As I was singing and glancing at the crowd I saw Lisa smiling at me and at the guy, I immediately knew that she had planned this, I wanted to kill her but nevertheless I wasn’t going to complain.

As the song came to an end, the crowd cheered and applaud. I walked back to my table as another girl started singing. I searched around with my eyes to see the blonde guy. I found him in the bar drinking alone. “Twenty seconds of courage” I prayed to myself and I walked over to him.
