Death: The Grand Interruption

Folder:
Dedications

Death is terribly inconvenient.

One minute you are
going about your life
then the next he suddenly appears
and interrupts.

I was working when he called
and announced his presence;
I disregarded the declaration
and continued about my business.

He called again
to relay the message
and this time I responded in hast.

I rushed to the ER
and was sent to your body
but I couldn't stand the sight
of your distended body.

I hurried to myremaining loved ones
and we held each other tighter
than ever before.

We sat in the so-called "consultation" room,
contemplating sudden death
and the afterlife.

While quietly sobbing,
we ponder a future without you;
bloodshot eyes envision
this new reality.

We play out your final moments,
picturing your thoughts
as you stared death in the eye
and allowed him to take you.

He came quickly;
you didn't give him a chance
to extend his welcome
and in that, we find peace.

We seek solace in the fact
you are where we one day hope to be,
away from the pain and sadness on earth.

Knowing you are happier now
makes the tears stop long enough
to become envious of your fate.
