An Uneventful Mystery Case

It was raining, I thought I was going to miss my train so I hurried to the shower, dressed up, smoked a cigarette, and rushed to the station. I knew the risks of going to Paris in the middle of the light crisis, but the thrill of a new case rushed into my veins and there was no way I could say no.

“Mr. Burckheart” I heard someone scream desperately at the station. I thought I was being taken to my hotel, but apparently the crisis was bigger than I expected, so we rushed to the station.

Upon arriving, the sheriff at the station filled me up on the details. Apparently there had been massive black outs at random times throughout the city. It had caused car accidents, thefts (since there were no alarms or security systems), and problems with emergencies (since phones weren’t working).

“We have reason to believe that there is a culprit behind this” the Sheriff told me. “They have unleashed a lot of crimes and robberies in banks, which is why we believe it was all planned. Please help us find out who the culprit is, Detective.”

“I will do my best. But you will need to give me time.”

This wasn’t going to be an easy case, I could sense it. But I would do anything in my power to save the city I loved and its people. My first strategy would be to find the power stations and figure out if anyone tampered with them. I would need to take a road trip around Paris.

Curiously enough, though, when examining each individual powerhouse, not once, but three times, nothing seemed wrong. I even had my team of experts analyze them with me, and so far, those seem in perfect condition. No reason for there to be random black outs.

I stayed thinking and rocking my brains for hours, trying to figure out what was causing these black outs. However, though, I did find a clue in the powerhouse. I found the keys to an underground storage. It might lead me to the culprit, or at least, closer.

It was late at night when I decided to go to the storage. It was well lit though, and I was able to enter with the key. It was a small, dark, enclosed room, however, there was an opening that led to the sewer, which was very odd. As soon as I stepped to look to the underground, the lights turned off. Another black out. I would have to go in with just my flashlight. Upon entering the sewer, I looked up and noticed that there were light and electricity cables going all along the sewage system. I decided that following them might lead me to the culprit, especially since there had just been a black out. He must be close.

I followed and followed, for as long as my legs could take me. What I found, could be, the reason I consider this my most boring and least exciting case in the end. I started hearing sounds, sort of chirping, and sounds of chewing. I ran to follow the sound, assuming it was the culprit behind this. However the closer I got, I started seeing rats all over the sewer. Eventually, I started noticing that they were stuck to the wall, eating something. Turns out it was the electric cables they were chewing, which was resulting in the black outs. After thinking for days that someone was behind this, it turns out it was inoffensive animals. Why were they eating the electricity cables? No one will know, but, at least, the city of Paris was saved from the lighting crisis.
