do you know this hell i've lived
have you heard all i've had to give
to stay alive and make it through
all i've survived, all i've had to do
then sit and listen to this ballad
i'll assure you this is no fraud
i've been lied to, cheated, and dumped
i've been spit on as some chump
i've been persecuted and beaten to life
i've tried so hard to live with this strife
i've tried so hard to just fit in
but i only get left in the wind
out of all this hell came a man
he had a goal, a method, a plan
he gave confidence to the lone
he stood up from once prone
he gave support to the frail
he kept the hopeless out of jail
to this man i owe the world
for he never settled for third
who is this man i so admire
why does he bring hope to my desires
why does he keep me going
why does he keep the pain coming
because he knows it's in line
that it's only a matter of time
before i'll face the moment of truth
and i'll have to resort to my roots
