At The Confession Of My Greater Sin

[after John 19:11]

In that grim morning's light, Pilate had been---
by Christ's own word to him--exonerated
from all of the responsibility:
for mine, alone mine, was the greater sin
(and my confession of it is belated).
The scourge, the cross, the death---this jeopardy
was placed upon the Lamb of God by me.
That new and unused garden tomb was hewed
by me, whose sins are far more dark and crude
than Pilate's.  For my sake, Christ---killed, entombed---
bore this, all this, that I should not be doomed
to everlasting, well deserved damnation.
He suffered the most ghastly agony---
that I might have eternal exultation.
