At The Readiness Of More Than Twelve Legions

[after Matthew 26:53]

More than twelve legions served in my command.
We stood at ready, that night, fully armed
to guarantee that he would not be harmed.
Swift and decisive, our preemptive force,
with one mind and one plan, could change the course
of that long shadowed realm's dire circumstances.
We waited with drawn swords and glinting lances
to rescue him from that approaching hour,
to smite the enemy with righteous power,
to have the joy that holy victory brings.
To soar forth righteously, we spread our wings,
as I asked, of his Father, leave to go
to Jesus' rescue. . . . But . . . He raised His hand . . .

and with tears in His eyes, said . . . sadly . . . "No."
