Sometimes “Fuck Nietzsche!” is the correct answer. All too many of us reveal our human folly thru idolatry and senseless imitation. Often time we repeat the adages and maxims without hesitation—and just as often without consideration for reality. There is no need to be accurate or wise.. We all like to quote Nietzsche because we think it makes us John Wayne-ly. That which does not kill me makes me stronger. Really? That’s not likely. Check out Syd Barrett or Peter Green if you need more proof of that folly. And let’s not forget that old Marion was a draft dodger in real life.
Now I see the lie
It didn’t make me stronger
I got out alive
You can learn from your trials and tribulation. You can emerge from Hell victorious but at what cost. A lot of homeless veterans can tell you how much stronger the travails of war made them. Yes, you can emerge wiser and with great insight but it’s often a delusion. Often time, the person quoting Nietzsche wants you to go thru undue tribulation to make their own life easier.
You sit on a yacht
while I toil in pain
missing the sunlight
You’re supposed to believe that you will benefit. So I will undergo this spiritual and physical exertion for a minimal reward. Hell indeed is upon us. You will struggle to keep yourself alive and someone will preach to you how lucky you are and how much better off you will be in the end. I have serious doubts that Nietzsche would have much respect for a lot of the people quoting him ad nauseum. They twist his words to suit their purposes a la Shicklgruber. Yes, I did survive. It didn’t kill me. But I damn sure ain’t stronger.
