THE GOOD GUY DOESN’T ALWAYS GET THE GIRL

I’ve been sold

on the false notion

that there is always hope

and guile can guide one

in the plight against centuries

but history does seem dim

in comparison

to the rosy pictures painted

in those Hollywood movies

The good guy doesn’t

always get the girl

and we don’t get to ride off

into the sunset

to live happily ever after

in some sanitized American Dream

The false illusions presented

corrupt the pure spirit

and the soul finally becomes

a shell of its former self

destined to sit on a shelf

Everything gathers cobwebs

and collects the dust

to which we eventually return

It’s a tad too depressing

to fully contemplate

One needn’t give up hope

to be sure but one need realize

that the struggles of humanity

are perpetually revisited

and vigilance does seem in order
