We all need
somebody to love
but do we really need
Grace Slick and Freddie Mercury
to tell us about it?
Grace who tries to deny Woodstock
and Freddie Mercury
who may have loved too much
well, maybe,
this whole culture is false;
rotten to the core
We believe everything
We hear on television
and allow basketball players
to decide what sneakers
we should wear
but what about love?
What about love
since we brought the subject up?
Just what do we do about love?
It gets relegated
to the soppy sentiments
of a Hallmark card
and lonely sailors and cowboys
masturbate on emptiness
The hollowness of the screen
is merely a reflection
of the hollowness of our eyes
and the past is the past
This is the present
We need to find a way
to love to love ourselves
to some somebody else
without editorials on TV news
and newspapers reporting
We still need somebody to love
but love can kill quickly
when it isn’t real
when it isn’t real
but we refuse
to open our eyes
and see that fact
and it can’t be real
until we open our hearts
and open our souls
until we learn it requires
a little more giving
and a lot less taking
We all need
somebody to love
and it’s always there
in one form or another
free to be had
if we only open our eyes
to see
and open our hearts
to love
