MOCKING FALL NIGHT'S VANITY

Fall nights and the eastern wind,
Add to the heart's gloom,
Even the growing moon is dim,
In the open I am, needing more room!

"A jug of wine and a loaf of bread",
Along with his beloved in the wilderness;
Was the concept of Eden to Khayyam*
Ah, how I miss my fair one's loveliness!

In the 'Tavern' of the most generous Saqi*,
I happened to spend some time again,
And satiated by the hospitality,
My starved self rekindled forgotten pain.

Ah, for this world and all its allures!
The penchant for Heaven...the saint endures,
Affliction, penury and self-mortification;
Yet he too ends up locked in coffin's doors!

For me did God Most High make this universe,
Blessing me with the Muses' water and verse;
Yet unlike me most of Adam's progeny,
Are deceived and trapped by Satan's story!

Ah, fairest maiden, enlivening my dreams!
Come tonight dressed in smooth satin seams;
And refill my cup with the drink divine,
Which can make me yours and you mine!

And if the Fall night should happen to oppose,
Our merriment, bliss and ecstatic repose;
Tell our generous and most loving Caretaker,
So that He bans the prying of envious foes.

Let me taste love's purity found in your gaze,
And the wisdom of Eve's passion in your embrace;
Let me laugh and mock the jealous autumn night,
While bestowing on you my loving arms' might.

O my beloved maiden, come down from above,
To shower me with your spiritual care and love;
With your divine powers take me along with you,
To your eternal realm where the angels still bow:

And remain prostrated to the godliness of Man,
From the very moment that time too began,
And let me also dwell in the Garden of delight,
Let us bask in the beauty of Light upon Light!
